Vinayakachaviti is considered as first festival of Indians. All other festivals start after this festival only. It is celebrated as it is the birthday of Lord Ganesha. The festival is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada, starting on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon period). The festival lasts for 10 days, ending on Ananta Chaturdashi.

On this day before performing puja to Lord Ganesha  whose birthday is celebrated as vinayakachaviti  everyone offers first pray to Gouri Devi (Mother of Lord Ganesha).

We all respect our god and traditions.

Enjoying the Ganapathi Utsav is part of it.

Competing with other mandals to have better scenery is also part of it.

But now a days it has become fad to have bigger and more attractive idol of GANAPATI, rather than competing for theme of the scenery!!!

This not only pollutes water in rivers and sea but also make the horrible situation at the sea shore next morning.

We should do something as citizen of India to keep our country clean, to continue respecting GOD and to keep our tradition running.

After Ganesh Chaturthi Ganeshas will be all set to find their space into waters on completion of the grand festival. Every year the numerous Ganesh idols which are made of Plaster of Paris supported by iron rods, painted with layers or metallic colors and toxic paints such as varnish raise in the levels of calcium, lead, mercury, cadmium, etc causing water pollution in water bodies.

Following are few suggestions:

  1. Keep the idols small and theme BIG: Idol of GOD, whatever may be its size, we have same respect. Then why to have big idols polluting our rivers more..!
  2. No chemicals: Chemical colors/material used to make the idols should be avoided as far as possible.
  3. Immersion in flowing water only : It is a Spiritual blessing from Lord Ganesh for Immersion in flowing water rather than immersing the idols in tank, because it help it carry dissolved Ganesh tatva through flowing water everywhere.
  4. Use echo-friendly idols: We can use the echo-friendly idols (created by paper & sand only). Avoid plaster of paris.  Use pure clay and natural colors though they do not look as bright as synthetic colors.
  5. As far as possible do not throw the flowers and scenery material in the sea.
  6. Also we can give the idols to the NGO’s who take care of Geneshji’s idol.

So what are you waiting for?
Ganesh Chaturthi is coming…
We need to hurry up to carry this message to rest of the community and to share the awareness …

When small and lovely Ganesh idols made with natural products can serve the purpose, why pollute the water with the toxics.
